The Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan apparently are close to an agreement that will enable midfielder David Beckham to stay with the Serie A side until the Italian season is finished, various outlets reported late Monday.
Beckham, who has been with AC Milan on loan since December and repeatedly has stated his desire to remain with the club, reportedly will not be rejoining the Galaxy until mid-July and will miss at least the first 17 games of the upcoming MLS regular season.
It was reported that the 33-year-old midfielder would be allowed to extend his loan agreement with AC Milan beyond its May 9 expiration date. He then would have to wait until the MLS international transfer window opens on July 15 before rejoining Los Angeles.
Beckham, who originally signed a 5-year contract three years ago to come to MLS and the Galaxy, has a buyout clause that takes effect in November, when he would be free to join AC Milan on a permanent basis.
AC Milan officials have been seeking Beckham's permament transfer since he joined the club, but the Galaxy were said to be seeking as much as $10 million. Milan reportedly offered as little as $3 million for his services.
Beckham is included on the club's 24-man roster, which was finalized Monday, but his salary will not count against the salary cap until he returns. That could enable the Galaxy, which holds the top player allocation spot, to make other roster moves.
